The Traditional Roma Artisan Market has opened in the stone town of Gjirokastra, to change the city’s face, increasing job opportunities for citizens, especially Roma community members, and improving their working conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project “Construction of a Local Market for Traditional Roma Craft” was implemented by the Gjirokastra Municipality in close cooperation with the Institute of Roma Culture in Albania (IRCA) and is seen as an important step that is expected to bring positive changes for the residents of Gjirokastra.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Traditional Roma Craft Market in the “Zinxhira” neighbourhood was funded by the European Union through the “EU for Municipalities” grant scheme. The total budget dedicated to this project has a value of 220,824.00 euros, of which 198,742.00 euros is the contribution of the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Traditional Roma Craft Market not only supports Roma artisans by providing a space to display and sell their products, but it also gives the citizens of Gjirokastra and tourists a chance to learn more about Roma culture and tradition. The establishment of such a marketplace not only creates job opportunities for many locals, consequently increasing employment but also adds to the city’s allure for international tourists and those passionate about culture and handicrafts. Flamur Golemi, the Mayor of Gjirokast\u00ebr, has been supportive of this project from the outset, recognizing its role in fostering the integration of the Roma community.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This project represents another significant investment that will greatly contribute to the further integration of the Roma community. The new market will serve as a space for interaction and exchange, fostering connections not only within the community but also with the broader society,” stated Flamur Golemi, the mayor of Gjirokastra.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a time when the local economy requires stimulation and diversification, the construction of the Roma market in Gjirokastra presents an innovative and sustainable solution for citizens. This is an outstanding opportunity to invest in the potential of the Roma community and to encourage intercultural interaction and cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the implementation of the transformation works by the Gjirokastra Municipality, the Ambassador of the European Union, Silvio Gonzato, also visited the Traditional Roma Artisan Market.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the project, the Institute of Roma Culture in Albania (IRCA) has conducted training sessions with craftsmen and artisans of the Roma minority living in Gjirokastra, focusing on enhancing their knowledge in marketing and adopting effective techniques to boost the sales of handicrafts.<\/span><\/p>\n

The market spans a total area of 2000 square meters and comprises a light-structured building, an open market area, and a large space. Additionally, the project facilitated the provision of furniture and other essential services for local Roma artisans. These spaces now house a community center, fully equipped and furnished for educational and\u00a0<\/span>recreational activities, with an estimated 1500 community members set to benefit from its offerings. The project also included four training sessions covering business, marketing, and other capacity-building activities for local artisans, along with the training of eight municipal staff members to effectively manage the community’s educational and recreational programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

All are born equal and deserve opportunities for a dignified life. This principle is the foundation of human rights and forms the basis of a just and equal society. Respecting human dignity and ensuring equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, race, faith, or economic status, is essential to building a better world. Access to education, healthcare, employment, and a life free from discrimination and injustice should be available to every individual. Only by doing so can we build a society where everyone can fulfill their potential and live a life of dignity.<\/span><\/p>\n
